CT scan for a fractured ankle?

My 11 year-old son has fractured his ankle and the podiatrist we consulted said it was Salter Fracture Type 1. The doctor has done x-rays in the office, but also ordered a CT scan. I would like to know if the CT scan is really necessary and if the radiation exposure risk is justifiable in the case of a small fracture?
