To what extent was the use of atomic bombs by the United States justified?

The precedent of bombing and killing civilians in large urban areas had already been established in the First World War. By the Second World War, even more civilians were killed by bombing in both Asia and Europe. The Japanese themselves bombed civilians in many Chinese cities from 1937-1945, the United States simply used larger bombs and killed even more civilians in Japan in 1945.
